
Museum of the Risorgimento
The Museum of the Risorgimento has been in Via Lomellini since 1934, in the building where Giuseppe Mazzini was born. It also houses the archives and a specialized library. The tour of the Museum of the Risorgimento runs through 14 rooms built on three floors.
Hundreds of art works and objects are on display including relics, paintings, prints, posters, manuscripts, weapons, uniforms and more documenting the political, social and cultural development of the Italian Risorgimento.
Museums of La Strada Nuova
La Strada Nuova, later called via Garibaldi, is a street that symbolizes the wealth of the Republic of Genoa between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The street was designed by architect Galeazzo Alessi and opened in the mid sixteenth century uniting the houses of two noble families, the Grimaldi and Spinola. Included in the list of Rolli, a list of buildings that could accommodate dignitaries during state visits, the museums of La Strada Nuova include: Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Tursi.
Parchi di Nervi
Situated east of Genoa, the Parchi di Nervi is the largest urban park making it a green lung for the city.
Directly accessible from the promenade Anita Garibaldi, through a railway underpass, the parks are made up by uniting three large gardens belonging to three different neighboring properties: Villa Groppallo, Villa Serra and Villa Grimaldi. Villa Serra houses the Gallery of Modern Art while, Villa Grimaldi is famous for its rose rarden and is home to the Frugone Collection an important collection of art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Fiera di Genova
Fiera di Genova is a large exhibition area near the city centre overlooking the sea which, sets it apart from other international fair grounds.
It is easily accessible by car (via the flyover) and for those coming from outside the city, by train (Genova Brignole Station) and by bus (Piazzale Kennedy).
The Porto Antico
Restored during Genoa Expo '92 and designed by architect Renzo Piano, the historic harbour area known as the Porto Antico (also called expo) extends from Piazza Cavour to Ponte Parodi.
It extends the whole length of the waterfront and is backed by the overpass (very important for traffic circulation). Currently the Porto Antico is partly used as a residential area but it is also an important center of tourism, culture and services.
Aquarium
The Aquarium of Genoa whose structure was designed by architect Renzo Piano is located on Ponte Spinola in the Porto Antico.
At the aquarium you will find many species of fish and other marine organisms divided by geographical location, reptiles, dolphins, sharks, penguins, turtles and seals.
Monumental Cemetery
The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno is not only a memorial place for the remembrance of famous Genoese citizens and foreigners alike but, it is also considered an open-air museum. The wealth of sculptures and architecture in the cemetary is truly amazing.
In it different styles and artistic currents ranging from Neoclassicism (which sets the tone for the architectural features) to Realism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco mix together harmoniously.
Royal Palace
The Royal Palace is located at number 2 on Via Balbi, the eponymous street linked to the prestigious Genoese aristocratic family.
In 1824 the building was bought by the Savoy and then modified to suit the demands of the royal family whose name still identifies the building. The rooms, are decorated by works from the greatest Genoese artists of the seventeenth century as well as masterpieces by Bassano, Tintoretto, Luca Giordano, Anton Van Dyck, Ferdinand Voet and Guercino.
Palazzo Spinola
The Palazzo Spinola di Pelliceria (Palazzo Francesco Grimaldi) is located in the city's historical center, just a short distance from the main places of interest, the Aquarium and the Ducal Palace. Built in 1593, it is mentioned by Rubens in his work on the Palazzi dei Rolli, noble houses that at the time of the Genoese Republic could accommodate dignitaries during state visits.
