The Lighthouse
Built in 1128 on top of Capo di Faro (a cape later called San Benigno), the Lighthouse of Genoa has always been a symbol of the city.
In ancient times bonfires were lit on top of the cape to signal the presence of the port to seamen.
The Lighthouse is only accessible by foot via a path to the lighthouse (financed during works for the G8 in 2001) which, starting from the ferry terminal, runs for 700 meters along the old fortifications to a small park on the hill. A small museum inside the fortifications has been open since 2002. Advance reservations are required to visit the museum.
