Monumental Cemetery
The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno is not only a memorial place for the remembrance of famous Genoese citizens and foreigners alike but, it is also considered an open-air museum. The wealth of sculptures and architecture in the cemetary is truly amazing.
In it different styles and artistic currents ranging from Neoclassicism (which sets the tone for the architectural features) to Realism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco mix together harmoniously.
The opening of the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno dates back to 1851. It is the creation of architect Carlo Barbino who began the project, and his successor Giovanni Battista Resasco.
